INTERNATIONAL MASTERS PROGRAMME (EDUCATION)
UNIVERSITY OF PLYMOUTH
Module Leader: Dr. Nick Pratt
This module is the gateway into the Masters Dissertation stage and aims to ensure that you:
understand some of the broad methodological issues and ideas that relate to research in education;
have a clear research question (even if this eventually changes slightly as you get under way);
have a clear idea about the methods that you are likely to use in responding to this question;
have considered the ethical implications of your study.
The module is assessed by means of the Dissertation Proposal. However, to prepare for this assessment you are required to study components on this site and undertake at least three of the tasks described therein. To support you, these tasks are submitted to the appropriate tutor who will then give you feedback. Note that this is a learning experience and these tasks are not assessed, except formatively for your own benefit. We cannot emphasise strongly enough how important it is to engage fully in this process.
This process starts with the only compulsory task: Task A from Beginning Research, which ensures that you begin by framing a clear research question. When you look at the other components you will see that they end with one or more tasks for you to try. These include tasks about either, or both, of methods of data collection and/or methods of data analysis. You have to submit one of each of these kinds of tasks to make up the three you are required to tackle. Undertaking all three will give you the chance to consider activities relevant to your own research and then to obtain help and advice from tutors and you should consult your MA Dissertation supervisor about which component tasks to undertake. The Dissertation Proposal itself is the only summative of assessment for the module and there are Guidance Notes on developing this dissertation here.
The description above is a summary of the process; once you are enrolled on the module you will receive an email explaining in detail how it works. Click here if you want to see this detailed description now.
Only those enrolled for the Masters Dissertation stage of the IMP, or who have separately enrolled for this module, will be able to obtain feedback from component tutors on completed tasks and will be eligible to submit the Dissertation Proposal as the module assignment.
